(Las Vegas).- A union representing hospitality workers has reached a tentative agreement with four hotel-casinos in downtown Las Vegas, but employees at three other properties, The Golden Nugget, the Downtown Grand and the Virgin Las Vegas, are preparing to strike on Monday — the start of a busy Super Bowl week.

Union agrees with 4 hotel-casinos; 3 others close to facing work stoppage in Las Vegas before Super Bowl starts

By Saturday morning, the Culinary Workers Union announced it had reached a tentative five-year contract with Binion's, Four Queens, Fremont and Main Street that covers about 1,000 workers.

The Golden Nugget, the Downtown Grand and the Virgin Las Vegas, near the Strip, have not reached an agreement with the union.

The three largest employers on the Las Vegas Strip — MGM Resorts International, Caesar Entertainment and Wynn Resorts — struck deals late last year with a union representing 40,000 workers, narrowly avoiding dealing with a historic strike.

The union then turned its attention to securing the same contract terms for workers at other hotel-casinos in Las Vegas.

Since early January, the union had reached agreements with most of those properties, including Circus Circus, Sahara Las Vegas, Strat, Circa Resort and El Cortez.

But after facing a problem in negotiations with some of the remaining casinos, the union announced last week that it would go on strike if tentative contracts were not ready by 5:00 a.m. Monday for casino workers. downtown casinos in properties that had not reached agreements.

The 58th Super Bowl is expected to draw about 330,000 people to Las Vegas this week, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The Culinary Union is the largest in Nevada, with about 60,000 members statewide. Negotiates on behalf of its members for five-year contracts.
